Supporting Our Community Through Potential Immigration Law Changes

Recent discussions about changes to immigration policy at the federal level and mass deportations has caused confusion and worry across the country and within its institutions of higher education. Although much remains uncertain at this point, we want to share with you what we do know.

Since our inception, Dallas College has made our community our first priority, welcoming students, faculty and staff from around the world to realize and contribute to our mission: transforming lives and communities through higher education. This remains a priority of the college and is reflected in the diverse faces that walk our campuses, as well as the distinct programs that make up the institution's curriculum.  To that end, we remain committed to and focused on our purpose and will continue to do everything we can to support our students and protect the individual rights of the respective members of the community within the confines of established laws and policies.

To be clear, under current law, no employee of Dallas College is required to assist federal immigration authorities or to grant access to areas that are limited access, absent a warrant. (Please note that federal law prohibits interference with enforcement activity, i.e. hiding evidence, concealing or hiding individuals that are subject of a warrant or interfering with an arrest.)

As an open-door institution, we understand that recently discussed changes to immigration policy, if realized, could have profound implications on our community. Therefore, college administration, including our Office of General Counsel, will continue to monitor this issue and assess any possible impact on the Dallas College community, as well as our family and friends, as the situation evolves. In addition, as always, we stand ready to provide and/or direct you to the resources you will need to make the most informed decision about your individual circumstance when the situation demands.
