The dental hygiene students provide preventive services to assess and screen for disease, provide preventive measures to reduce the risk of gum disease and dental decay, and promote oral health.
The following services are provided in the Dallas College dental hygiene clinic free of charge:
- Medical, dental and social history review
- Vital signs
- Radiographs (X-rays)
- Oral cancer screening
- Periodontal assessment
- Dental examination
- Diagnosis of oral health needs
- Application desensitizing agents
- Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning)
- Deep cleaning (scaling and root planning)
- Fluoride application
- Sealant application
- Oral hygiene instruction and education
- Care of dental prosthesis
- Nutritional advisement
- Smoking cessation
The following services are not provided in the Dallas College dental hygiene clinic:
- Emergency or urgent care
- Restorative (fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, etc.)
- Endodontics (root canals)
- Periodontal surgery
- Oral surgery (extraction, implants, etc.)
- Orthodontics (braces)
- Jaw pain treatment
- Removable appliances (dentures, partials, etc.)
Having your teeth cleaned in the Dallas College dental hygiene clinic is not a substitute for regular visits to your dentist. Patients who require dental services beyond the scope of the preventive services provided are referred to their private dentist or specialist. For a patient without a dental home, a list of community clinics and offices in the area is provided.
