The United Nations defines sustainable development as "meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs." But what does that really mean? How will we know when we're successful?
The 17
Sustainable Development Goals offer a shared global vision and goals for achieving true sustainability. They provide:
- A framework within which countries, organizations and and individuals can voluntarily establish their own sub-goals, targets, programs and initiatives to support the overarching global goals
- A common language for communication
- Opportunities for partnerships and collaborations to achieve the goals
Dallas College uses the 17 SDGs as a teaching and learning framework for our sustainability education program. They serve as a roadmap that enables students to envision the destination -- a world in which we enjoy:
- Social sustainability
- Environmental sustainability
- Economic sustainability
The 17
Sustainable Development Goals show us the outcomes of true sustainability.
Dallas College is supporting these goals, which serve as a roadmap to achieving a healthy environment, a thriving economy and equity for all.
Many other organizations in Dallas County support these goals as well.
