Dr. Justin Lonon: Higher education provides knowledge and training to our students from all walks of life and backgrounds. It gives our students the tools they need to succeed - while also reducing inequities in the workforce and in our communities. The education our students receive at Dallas College helps to reduce poverty, provides access and opportunities for careers, trains people for jobs that pay a living wage and gives families security. We're building a sustainable community as we strive to solve problems that are barriers to success, to careers and economic growth. Dallas College students receive free transportation to all of our campuses through the DART GoPass program. Credit and continuing education students who take a specified number of hours with us can ride to school for free as well. Dallas College's efforts are not only benefiting students financially, but also benefiting the environment. The GoPass is just one example of how we're making partnerships that remove barriers of inequity. Dallas college's partnership with the North Texas Food Bank brings food to our college campuses through the food bank's mobile food pantry. All seven of our main campuses have a food pantry that's open for both students and employees. Having access to fresh fruits and vegetables plus other food staples help them feed themselves and their families. Dallas College is also providing last-dollar scholarships through the Dallas County Promise program. Promise students can go to school tuition-free and students earn college credit as they attend and finish high school, then they can earn a credential at Dallas College and transfer to one of our Promise university partners to continue their education. We all must work together to reduce the inequities we see in our communities and build sustainable practices that support our families and businesses. The network that Dallas College is building in North Texas brings partners together as we all work to achieve a healthier environment and sustainable future, which improves lives and builds communities.
