Changes to the 2024-2025 FAFSA

There’s a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid for 2024-2025. The redesigned and streamlined application launched on Dec. 31, 2023.

Here’s what you need to know about the updated form.

What’s Changing?

  • The form is shorter! The number of questions on the FAFSA application was reduced to 46, and students may not have to answer all 46 questions. Some applicants will need to complete as few as 18 questions, taking less than 10 minutes.
  • Access to Federal Pell Grants is expanding. Now, more students from low-income backgrounds will be eligible to receive federal Pell Grants due to updates to student aid calculations.
  • The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be replaced with the Student Aid Index (SAI). This removes the number of family members in college from the calculation. That means students with siblings in college may see changes in their eligibility for aid.
  • There are new FAFSA account (FSA ID) requirements. Each FAFSA contributor is required to create an FSA ID. Contributors can include:
    • The student
    • The student’s spouse (if applicable)
    • The biological or adoptive parents (and other parent if parents live together but are not married or married but file separate tax returns) or
    • Stepparent if parent divorced and has remarried
