The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Health Information Technology (HIT) program is a 60-credit hour curriculum that prepares students to identify and use a variety of informational resources and technologies to perform entry-level skills in health information positions.
Students need a wide variety of knowledge, skills and experiences to prepare for a career in health information technology:
- Coding and billing
- Regulatory requirements
- Medical terminology
- Basic anatomy and physiology
- Diseases, treatment procedures and medications
- Computer software applications
The program provides basic training in computers, health information content and management, quality improvement, coding and reimbursement, legal aspects of health information and management of health care delivery systems.
According to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), professionals credentialed as Registered Health Information Technicians have the following skills:
- Ensuring health records and information are complete, accurate and timely.
- Using computer applications to enter and analyze patient data to improve patient care or control costs.
- Coding patient diagnoses and procedures for insurance reimbursement; for databases and registries; to maintain patients' medical and treatment histories; or for use in research.
A specialized role for these professionals is that of a cancer registrar, responsible for collecting and maintaining data on cancer patients.
