Pregnant and Parenting Students

Many students at Dallas College start and grow their families while also pursuing their education. It is a Dallas College priority to support the academic success of pregnant and parenting students and to provide resources to help balance school and family life.

If you are a pregnant or parenting student looking for resources, accommodations and support, Accessibility Services can help you navigate the process and communicate your accommodations to faculty.

You might seek an accommodation for pregnancy if you experience:

  • Pregnancy symptoms that are interfering with your schoolwork (e.g., morning sickness, fatigue, hyperemesis gravidarum).
  • A complicated delivery and need additional support.
  • Postpartum mood disorder, such as postpartum depression, anxiety or panic.

Common accommodations for students who are pregnant may include:

  • Excused absences
  • Excused tardies
  • Adjusted assignment deadlines
  • Preferential seating
  • Audio recording of lectures
  • Reduced distraction test environment
  • Rescheduling exams missed due to pregnancy or childbirth
  • Considerations related to food, water or restroom access

To begin the process for accommodations, you may email DSSO@DallasCollege.edu or complete the Accommodation Request Application.

Once Accessibility Services receives your email or the Accommodation Request Application, a case manager will reach out to you within 24 hours to discuss your accommodation requests and explain the process.

Dallas College also provides a parenting liaison who helps parenting students find essential resources, including childcare. Please contact Angela Walker, LMSW, at AWalker1@DallasCollege.edu.
