(DALLAS) — Please join all seven campuses of Dallas College as we honor the achievements, history and contributions of Latinos during Hispanic Heritage Month. This year's virtual celebration includes lectures, art, a voter registration drive and other activities. Most events will take place virtually in Microsoft Teams or Cisco Webex.
The celebration takes place across Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Eastfield, El Centro, North Lake, Mountain View and Richland campuses, with ample opportunities to learn about the rich cultural heritage and tradition found in Latino communities. For a list of

Here Are a Few Noteworthy Events:
Dolores Huerta
Thursday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. – American labor and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta will make a virtual visit to Dallas College during a voter rally. Huerta, president and founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, will discuss the importance of civic engagement in the Latino Community. Huerta, along with Cesar Chavez, is a co-founder of the United Farm Workers. This event will be held on Webex.

Monday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. – “Hispanic/Latinx and Its Terminology." Students will be able to engage in a Q&A panel discussion regarding the terminology in Hispanic and Latinx communities. The discussion will also highlight the creation and identity of Chicano(a)s.

Thursday,
Sept. 24, at noon – Virtual salsa lessons! This launches a four-week series of dance lessons featuring Salsa, Bachta, Merengue and Cumbia put on by the Kumbala Dance Studio.

Tuesday, Sept. 29, at noon– “COVID, Race and the Census." Dallas College Mountain View Campus Spanish faculty member Ulises Rodriguez leads a discussion on COVID-19, race and the census and their impact on the Latino community. Register for the Sept. 29 event here.
Thursday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. – “TED Circle with Michelle Navarro." Join us for this special TED Circle with Michelle Navarro as we watch and discuss her talk, “Encouraging Hispanic Girls to Grow," from her talk during the 2014 TEDx event at Mountain View. This event will take place on our

Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. – Dr. Javier Avila, a poet, is known for his one-man show, “The Trouble with My Name." The celebrated artist teaches others how to deal with prejudice. An author and storyteller, he uses comedy and poetry to tackle tough subjects and shed light on the American Latino experience.

Thursday, Oct. 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Poetry from Our Roots." The Office of Student Life and Engagement will host a poetry contest where students can express themselves. We will showcase students' poetry that focuses on Latinx heritage. Students from all backgrounds are invited to join us on

Diane Guerrero
Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. – An evening with Diane Guerrero from the acclaimed Netflix prison drama, “Orange Is the New Black." Guerrero's address is scheduled for 6 p.m. Guerrero is a poet and advocate for immigration reform. She is nominated for the 34th Imagen Awards, is the winner of the Lupe Ontiveros Indomitable Spirit Award by the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and Variety named her one of the top 10 Latina actresses to watch.
