(DALLAS) — By the time they reach college age, almost 50% of young adults have faced a mental health disorder, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The American Psychological Association reports that, by nearly every metric, student mental health is worsening.

Recognizing and staying vigilant to this sobering trend, Dallas College has Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) centers at all seven main campuses to provide free in-person and virtual counseling sessions, as well as referrals to additional resources. “To date, we have offered over 5,000 individual sessions and responded to hundreds of walk-in appointments, calls to our call center and referrals to outside resources this academic year alone,” said Kaitlin Hill, M.S., LPC-S, NCC, associate dean of CAPS.

On May 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dallas College’s admission-free Mind Matters: 2023 Mental Health and Wellness Symposium will bring together community members, faculty and staff for a day of learning and awareness. Morning highlights include a “State of Student Mental Health” presentation by Dallas College CAPS leadership. Keynote speaker Abraham Sculley of Active Minds will share his personal journey of becoming a mental health advocate, following his own struggle with depression.

“We hope that this event centers conversations about mental health and the importance of being aware of resources available to Dallas College students to support their mental health. Additionally, we work daily to acknowledge that mental health — and support for our mental health — is for everyone. This symposium is another testament to that,” shared Hill.
