This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing the Health Information Technology associate degree. It does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Health Information Technology. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours (15 hours) required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official degree requirements.

The A.A.S. in Health Information Technology (HIT) program is a 60-credit hour curriculum that prepares students to identify and use a variety of informational resources and technologies to effectively perform entry-level skills in health information positions. The program provides basic training in computers, health information content and management, quality improvement, coding and reimbursement, legal aspects of health information, and management of health care delivery systems​. Courses that complete the degree are noted below.

POFI 1301 – Computer Applications I

MDCA 1313 – Medical Terminology A grade of “C" or better is required as a prerequisite to later courses in this degree.

MDCA 1409 – Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Assistants A grade of “C" or better is required as a prerequisite to later courses in this degree.

ENGL 1301 – Composition I This is a Core course. Must earn A grade of “C" or better.

PREREQUISITE SEMESTER ACTION ITEMS

  1. POFI 1301 must be the specific section for HIT program.
  2. Meet with your advisor to confirm academic and career goals before the end of the semester.
  3. HESI A2 Assessment Exam must be taken with a passing score of 40 or higher before taking any additional courses in this pathway.

SPCH 1311 – Introduction to Speech Communication This is a Core course.
