Substitute Teaching

​​​​​Substitute teaching is a challenging yet gratifying job that is in high demand at our regional school districts. 

As a substitute teacher, you will enjoy job flexibility in your work environment and work schedules as you support students in K-12 classrooms.  Although it takes a lot of enthusiasm and hard work, you can build a robust skillset that will help prepare you for fulfilling careers in education.

The substitute teacher certificate is designed to prepare you with the necessary tools for basic teaching techniques, classroom management and survival skills, and guidelines as a substitute teacher. There are two courses required to obtaining the substitute teacher certificate (Substitute Teacher Training and Special Topics in Education). Additional requirements for substitute teachers vary by school district. 

The substitute teacher certificate can be earned by students in a current degree program at Dallas College, or earned by taking continuing education courses. 

Program Eligibility

Anyone 18 years of age who has obtained a H.S. Diploma or G.E.D interested in becoming a substitute teacher is welcome to enroll in the course. It is open to the public.

Requirements to become a Substitute Teacher

All substitute teachers in Texas must first pass a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting. Information will be provided to you when you apply for a substitute teacher position with a school district. Additional requirements for substitute teachers vary by school district."
